Why Just 5 Minutes?
In today's fast-paced world, it often seems impossible to carve out time for gardening. Some of us believe that to the core, and never create a garden thus missing out on so many rewards of having a garden space. Best of all, get this, size doesn't matter, big or small it doesn't matter the benefits are still numerous. I want you to know, think about it we really do have 5 measly minutes day that we can steal away from our TV watching or Social Media scrolling. This small 5 minute a day commitment can yield a range of advantages that not only contribute to a healthier, more vibrant outdoor space but a healther, more lively you. For example, I stack-task each morning and feel so accomplished within the first 30 minutes of waking. I make it a point to get up before Becky-Rose my Yorkshire Terrier, I grab my cup of coffee or tea and Becky-Rose and I head out to the morning nook, my sitting space where she can potty while I sip and contemplate my day's activities, we then head out to the garden area listen to the bubble of water from the goldfish pond, and while she runs around chasing geko's, I sip and preview my garden. Looking under leaves to see who might have moved into my garden overnight. I grab my knee pad and proceed to sit at a section and for 5 minutes I do nothing but sip and pull. You would be surprised how much of a clean up can happen when pulling weeds for just 5 minutes. and if you do a a 5 minute space each day, your garden will look like you've spent hours in it.
Enhancing Your Mental Well-Being
Imagine how great you'll feel when your cup is empty, the weed container is full, the puppy is energetically happy and your day is already planned and your garden looks great, you've just earned bragging rights! Studies have shown that engaging with nature, even for a short time, can reduce stress and anxiety. The act of tending to plants allows for mindfulness and can provide a much-needed break from the daily grind and I just proved that spending just a few minutes in your garden can dramatically improve your mental health. When you arrive home from the dreaded afternoon traffic and a long 8 hrs. at work, taking a short stroll around your garden or yard, can uplift your mood and restore your focus before you head on into the house to face the chronic hours, of cooking dinner, homework with the kids and bath-time chaos.
Physical Benefits of Quick Gardening Sessions
Gardening offers physical benefits as well. Although five minutes may not seem like much, it encourages movement and physical activity. Simple tasks, such as bending and squating while pulling a few weeds, watering plants, or checking for garden pests, keep you active and flexible. Regularly engaging in these small tasks contributes to overall health, increasing flexibility and promoting a more active lifestyle. Moreover, these quick bursts of activity lead to the accumulation of beneficial exercises that can keep you fit over time.
Building a Routine
Integrating a five-minute gardening routine into your daily life can help cultivate a sense of responsibility towards your garden. This routine not only makes gardening more approachable but helps foster a deeper connection with your plants over time. As you observe the changes and growth in your garden daily, you will develop a greater appreciation for your green space, ultimately leading to a more joyful gardening experience. Whether it’s planting seeds, trimming plants, or simply enjoying the beauty of flowers, small, consistent efforts can lead to a thriving garden.
Conclusion
In conclusion, dedicating just five minutes a day to your garden can transform how you interact with nature. While it may seem trivial, this simple practice brings significant mental and physical benefits. Over time, these small moments contribute to the overall health of your garden and enhance your well-being. So, take a breath, step into your green space, and let your daily five minutes in the garden work wonders.
